Part Four
"―From Now On, You Better Treat Me with That Same Energy, Too!"
Chapter 146
That's Why...

With Haruki loaded onto the back of his bike, Hayato enthusiastically-*ss started pedaling away.

The crappy, unpaved-*ss road was bumpin' and shakin' all over the place.

Despite that, Hayato was straight-up tearin' through it at a pretty high speed.

The mailbox drifted away in the blink of an eye, and in its place, they got completely-*ss surrounded by lush green paddy fields.

Terrified of gettin' thrown off, Haruki squeezed her hands tight around Hayato's waist, yellin' out in straight-up protest.

"Hold up, Hayato, you're goin' way too d*mn fast?!"

"If I don't speed up, I can't keep my balance, ya know!"

"Okay, but why the heck are you intentionally-*ss ridin' through the farm roads?!"

"Duh, 'cause if we ride double on a public street, the cops are straight-up gonna bust us!"

"Forget the cops, the patrol out here is literally just local neighborhood volunteers! And besides, the nearest police box isn't even around unless you climb over a couple of mountains, right?!"

"Haha, true-*ss story!"

"Ugh, seriously~!"

Even while bickerin' like that, the bike kept rollin', carryin' both Haruki and Hayato further along.

Before long, a small creek came into view ahead of 'em.

The drop down to the water was about the height of a storage shed, and the width was roughly the length of a two-lane crosswalk—a tiny-*ss neighborhood bridge that was pretty common around these parts.

"Oh yeah, Haruki, you used to jump off that bridge into the river all the time back in the day, didn't you! Droppin' those weird-*ss poses too!"

"Ugh! Th-That was... ...well, I watched this TV show, so..."

"Haha, you straight-up dragged me into jumpin' with you, and I ended up soaked to the bone!"

"I-It felt crazy-*ss refreshing, so I just thought I had to show Hayato too!"

"Lookin' back now, we were doin' some pretty dangerous-*ss cr*p!"

"K-Kids are just built like that, okay?!"

Gettin' teased about her childhood cr*p made Haruki squeeze her grip around Hayato even tighter.

Findin' Haruki's reaction hilarious, Hayato's shoulders shook with a silent-*ss chuckle as they crossed the bridge.

Leavin' the river behind, they rode along the mountain path heading east, toward where the city was.

Then, a busted-up, abandoned factory with a corrugated tin roof—about the size of a school building—and a materials yard came into view.

"Man, that place brings back crazy-*ss memories! Wasn't it originally a lumber mill or somethin'? We used to sneak inside all the time to go explorin'!"

"If I remember right, didn't you get super into makin' wooden swords out of scrap wood, Hayato?"

"Heck yeah, I made all kinds of swords. But wait, didn't you make some crazy-*ss detailed, decorated ones too, Haruki? Pretty sure it was called Ankoku Seikiken Claiomh Solais = Ascalon Muramasa!"

"Gya!!??!? Ugh, my childhood self was straight-up cringe as heck! Like, how do you even-*ss remember that name, though?! Besides, you made somethin' called Mistilteinn = Juggernaut X1OA yourself, didn't you?! Where the heck did the X1OA even come from?!"

"Huh?! Th-That was... ...well, because of, y'know, that thing! Whatever, let's just agree to straight-up forget about our cringe pasts, okay?!"

"You're the one who brought it up in the first place, seriously!"

"Haha, ahahahahahahaha!"

"...Haha!"

And before they knew it, by the time they passed the abandoned factory, they were straight-up laughin' together.

Just like the old days.

Even after that, the bike wheels kept spinnin' while they chatted about random-*ss stuff.

Lookin' at the scenery from the bike, the houses were gettin' fewer and fewer.

Eventually, on the edge of the countryside, a roadside shrine near the entrance of the mountain path came into view.

It was a tiny-*ss shrine that had been there forever, with just a small roof coverin' six Jizo statues.

It sat right at the foot of the mountains surrounding Tsukinose, with dense-*ss woods spreadin' out right behind it.

Hayato stopped the bike right there and hopped off, and Haruki followed his lead.

Then, Hayato narrowed his eyes and muttered softly with a voice that sounded low-key nostalgic.

"Oh yeah, we straight-up chased Old Man Gen's runaway sheep all the way out here once, didn't we? Man, it's a good thing it didn't bolt up into the mountains."

"Well, the six Jizo statues at this roadside shrine are said to stand at the border of human settlement to watch over the countryside. So maybe that's why Mee-mee only came as far as here."

"Could be. Man, you're smart as heck about this stuff, as expected of a star student. Oh yeah, back then, Himeko went to go call Old Man Gen but ended up gettin' straight-up lost on the way, didn't she?"

"Right, right! Old Man Gen found her cryin' her eyes out, and she came right back with Old Man Gen in his mini truck."

"After that, even when we got home, she wouldn't stop ballin', screamin' 'sheepy, lost, uwa~'. I ended up gettin' chewed out for makin' my little sis cry."

"Aha, I can totally-*ss picture that vibe."

Closin' her eyes, what popped up behind Haruki's eyelids was the image of Hayato gettin' scolded by his Mom, Mayumi, with teary eyes, while Himeko balled her eyes out right next to him.

It was definitely the kind of wholesome-*ss scene you'd see in any normal family. Just picturing it made Haruki smile. Her lips softened.

But on the flip side, how the heck was Haruki back in those days?

'Look at you comin' home with your clothes trashed like this again! Do you have any d*mn clue how much of a pain in the ass laundry is?!'

Along with that verbal-*ss beatdown, Haruki's Grandpa's and Grandma's fists came straight-up flyin'.

Burnin' cheeks, and a dark-*ss hallway.

Two pairs of eyes lookin' down with a dead-*ss, expressionless stare.

Haruki had straight-up zero good memories left.

Haruki lost count of how many times she'd snuck out of the house at night, lookin' for any leftover warmth from the daytime, headin' straight to their secret base at the shrine.

Without even-*ss realizin' it, Haruki balled her hands into tight-*ss fists.

A deep crease formed right between her brows as Haruki hung her head.

But when Haruki opened her eyes, she locked gazes right with Hayato, who was already-*ss leanin' in close to check on her.

"Y'know, after you left, Haruki, I finally-*ss learned how to ride a bike, got bigger, built up some stamina, and figured out the local layout. I could straight-up go anywhere. ...But that was literally it. When I was by myself, I didn't do a single d*mn thing, and I couldn't do anything either."

"Eh, oh... ...wait, what?"

"When I actually-*ss think about it, this roadside shrine, that abandoned factory from earlier, every single spot in these mountains... ...and even out in the city too. Goin' to karaoke, the movies, the pool, or workin' part-time jobs. Whenever I went somewhere for the first time or tried somethin' brand-new, I was always-*ss with you, Haruki."

"Hayato...?"

Hayato muttered with a low-key self-deprecating-*ss chuckle, and just when it looked like he was furrowin' his brows, he aggressively-*ss scratched the back of his head. Then, he turned his gaze toward the mountain standin' right in front of 'em, wallin' off the countryside.

Haruki couldn't see Hayato's face from where she was.

Haruki shifted her gaze toward the mountain too. It was a massive-*ss mountain. Way taller than any peak she'd seen back in the city, straight-up splittin' Tsukinose from the outside world.

"By myself, I'm probably just some small-time, pathetic-*ss loser who can't get crap done. But... ...nah, that's exactly why, let's straight-up cross this mountain right now, partner!"

"...Huh?"

Gettin' hit with that out of nowhere, Haruki could only-*ss blink her eyes in total shock.

It was a straight-up sudden and chaotic-*ss proposal.

Turnin' back to look at Haruki, Hayato was rockin' that innocent, mischievous-*ss smirk just like when they were little kids.

It literally-*ss made zero d*mn sense.

But gettin' called a partner while havin' his hand held out to her, Haruki straight-up grabbed it reflexively with zero hesitation. There was no way in heck she could back down.

And more than anything, Haruki couldn't even-ass understand herself for feelin' her heart poundin' with crazy-*ss excitement.

"Alright, let's straight-up roll!"

"Eh, h-hold up a second~~!"

With Haruki's arm yanked forward, the bike wheels started spinnin' once again.

Author's Notes:

Ugh, so the sample copy for Tenbin Light Novel Volume 3 just got delivered. And we straight-up got a massive-*ss problem.

Yep, right there in the childhood flashback scenes and the character intro section, it explicitly-*ss states that Saki is an only child!

Shinta-kun!!! As of today, you're officially-*ss changed to Saki's little cousin, alright?! You're now her dad's little bro's son!! Let's just say you live in the exact same countryside and you're just crashin' at her place around the Festival season!!

Meow!!!!!

Translator's Notes:

You just realized it, now!? We already found it strange since his first appearance in Chapter 132, even though in Chapter 96, it's stated that she's an only child.
