"―From Now On, You Better Treat Me with That Same Energy, Too!"
Chapter 162
The Openin' Act
The second they got back to the foot of the shrine, Saki quickly-*ss headed off with hurried steps to change her clothes.
Out in the shrine courtyard, a bunch of bonfires were cracklin' wild, gently lightin' up the surroundin's that had gone dark after sunset.
"Here ya go, good-*ss job out there! Wanna grab a cold drink first?"
"Man, that ice-cold, fizzy-*ss drink hits the straight-up spot, I can't even!"
"For me, stuffin' my face comes first! Give me some meat, meat!"
"Alright, alright, there's plenty to go around, so don't go bustin' a gut rushin'!"
At the shrine, the women who had stayed behind welcomed everyone back with liquor and a whole-*ss feast. It was all grub whipped up from the sacred food offerin's.
The kitten also greeted Shinta with a straight-up "Mya!" as the kid was led by the hand toward the main shrine hall by a priest, carryin' the empty-*ss tray. The kitten chased right after his back with its tail stood straight-up tight.
Since they'd been haulin' the Festival float and marchin' all across Tsukinose, every single-*ss person was completely wiped out and carryin' a straight-up empty stomach.
There were still some minor-*ss rituals left for the Festival, but whatever.
They left the rest to the Priests, while the crowd jumped straight onto the beer and food a step ahead, throwin' a wild-*ss banquet with drinks in hand, turnin' the whole vibe into a rowdy-*ss party in the blink of a d*mn eye.
The hype was straight-up nowhere near coolin' down yet.
The leftover-*ss hype from the Festival was still pumpin' through Hayato's veins, keepin' his spirits high as heck.
Instead of grabbin' a beer, Hayato picked up two bottles of ramune, handin' one over to Haruki, who was chillin' out and restin' on one of the wooden foldin' benches set up around the shrine courtyard.
"Here ya go, Haruki."
"Thanks."
"Man, your voice is straight-up wrecked."
"…Well, I was literally-*ss screamin' the whole d*mn time, and it's not even that wrecked, though."
"Haha."
Being at the very-*ss front of the Festival float, Haruki had straight-up put in twice as much energy as anyone else out there.
Poutin' her lips a tiny-*ss bit at Hayato's teasin', Haruki took the ramune bottle from him.
Right at that exact-*ss moment, a little ways off, they caught sight of Himeko chargin' straight at a massive platter while screamin', "Give me that fried chicken!"
And after the local aunties showered Himeko left and right with all kinds of dishes, she scrambled around goin', "Whoa, hold up!", yet she still slickly-*ss stuffed her mouth until her cheeks were completely-*ss ballooned out.
Hayato let out a chuckle watchin' Himeko mess around, then pushed the marble down into his ramune bottle with a clean-*ss pop.
Haruki tried to follow Hayato's lead and shoved the marble down into hers too, but her bottle straight-up sprayed foam wild with a loud-*ss fizzin' sound. Just like back when she was a little-*ss kid, she still couldn't open a bottle of ramune to save her d*mn life.
"Wa, wa, awawa… …gulp, chug…"
"You're straight-up as bad as ever at openin' those things, y'know."
"…Burp."
Thinkin' it'd be a total-*ss waste, Haruki scrambled to press her lips against the bottle.
Since Haruki chugged the carbonated drink down all at once, a cute-*ss little burp naturally slipped right out of her.
When Haruki shot Hayato a straight-up defensive, half-lidded glare, he threw both hands up in the air as if to say, "My bad, my bad."
Then Hayato sat himself down right next to Haruki, lookin' back on everythin' that went down at today's Festival.
Takin' the lead at the very front alongside Saki, and haulin' the Festival float right along with every-*ss person in countryside.
The sight of those two had straight-up definitely become the talk of the entire Tsukinose by now.
Right before Hayato's eyes, the rowdy-*ss party where every single person was messin' around with a massive-*ss smile on their face pretty much said it all—the Festival was a total hit, and Haruki was straight-up accepted by everyone.
Gulp, Hayato downed the rest of his ramune in one shot. The corners of his mouth softened into a smile.
And then, just like that, the words Hayato felt from the absolute bottom of his heart slipped right out of him.
"Today was straight-up a blast. I'm genuinely-*ss glad I got to hit up the Festival right along with you, Haruki."
Haruki blinked her eyes blankly at Hayato's words, and then soft-*ssly smiled. Hayato flashed a smile right back.
"All of this is straight-up thanks to Saki-chan, huh."
"I was genuinely-*ss shocked when Murao-san jumped right in to help haul the float with us. It was so out of nowhere, and she was straight-up rocking a Festival Happi coat right over her Miko robes."
"Yeah… …Saki-chan is a straight-up good girl."
"Yeah, I totally-*ss think so too. Murao-san took massive care of me back when I caught that wild fever, y'know."
"I bet it's straight-up not just that, though. Probably since way back in the day. Ever since the exact-*ss moment Saki-chan became the Saki-chan she is now…"
"…Haruki?"
What Haruki was tryin' to get at didn't straight-up click with Hayato at all.
While Hayato was tiltin' his head in total confusion, Haruki pushed herself up to her feet and asked him a question while straight-up kickin' away a little pebble near her foot.
"Hey, Hayato—once you graduate, are you straight-up comin' back to Tsukinose?"
"…Huh?"
It was a total-*ss out-of-left-field question.
And it was somethin' Hayato had straight-up never even given a single thought to before.
Even bein' put on the spot like this, honestly-*ss, Hayato had no choice but to say he didn't d*mn know.
At best, the only tiny-*ss thing Hayato had locked down was the fact that he'd already decided to go off to college.
The rowdy-*ss noise of the Festival straight-up felt like it was comin' from somewhere far as heck away.
Seein' Hayato frownin' and makin' a complicated-*ss face, Haruki let out a soft chuckle and spun around on her heel.
Then Haruki headed straight toward the Kaguraden, which was set up right next to the Haiden.
It was a cozy-*ss little spot, about ten tatami mats big, where the sacred Kagura dance would be performed at the very end of the Festival.
Hayato quickly-*ss chugged the rest of his ramune and chased right after Haruki's back.
"Comin' back to Tsukinose, talkin' to Saki-chan, and hangin' out together made me straight-up think about somethin' out of the blue. I wondered what it would've been like if I had just stayed in Tsukinose this whole d*mn time."
"That's…"
Once again, the topic shifted.
Hayato tried his absolute-*ss best to picture it, but he just couldn't overlap the old Haruki from back then with the Haruki standin' right in front of him.
To Hayato, the childhood Haruki was just Haruki, and the present Haruki was Haruki.
Haruki flashed a slightly troubled-*ss smile, then gathered her long hair up with her hand.
"I bet I straight-up wouldn't have let my hair grow out long like this, y'know? It'd probably be short, a wolf cut, or a bob. I would've worn a skirt for the first time when I started middle school, and Hayato would've straight-up laughed his *ss off saying it didn't suit me at all. I would've become buddies with Saki-chan too, and every single-*ss time somethin' happened, I'd get told, 'Learn a thing or two from Murao-san,' and then, I probably would've― to Saki-chan."
"…"
That was a scene that straight-up might've actually-*ss been possible.
Their relationships with everyone else would've definitely-*ss been a whole lot different from how things were now, too.
But that was all just a bunch of "what-ifs."
Why Haruki had straight-up brought up that kind of talk out of nowhere made less and less d*mn sense to Hayato.
A deep-*ss frown creased right between Hayato's eyebrows.
"…Just kiddin'."
Sayin' that, Haruki let out a soft sigh and let go of her hair that she'd been holdin' up with her hand.
Haruki's black hair swayed and fanned out wide, lit up by the warm glow of the bonfires.
At that exact-*ss second, the whole vibe surroundin' Haruki straight-up shifted.
Before Hayato knew it, his eyes went wide as heck.
Standin' right there was the elegant, beautiful-ass girl Hayato'd caught sight of on his very first day after transferrin' schools.
"I'm not the Haruki from back then anymore, because right now, I'm Nikaidō Haruki."
"Oh—hey, hold up!"
Haruki whispered with a tiny-*ss bit of loneliness in her voice and stepped out toward the front of the stage.
Hayato reached his hand out to stop Haruki from leavin', but for some d*mn reason, his feet wouldn't move at all. No, it was more like he was straight-up made to feel that stayin' put and watchin' over her right there was the only right thing to do.
The Kaguraden was straight-up meant to be used for the grand finale of the Festival. Everyone was hangin' around, totally-*ss locked in and waitin' for that final moment to hit.
So when Haruki out of nowhere just strolled up onto the stage, she straight-up turned every d*mn head in the crowd, leavin' everyone wonderin' what the heck was goin' on.
In the middle of all that, Haruki took a massive-*ss deep breath, held up the empty ramune bottle in her hand like it was a mic, and spun a literal world-changin' spell.
'Anata ni hitomebore~♪' (I fell for you at first sight~♪)
"―Oh."
In a split second, the rowdy-*ss noise of the crowd was completely wiped out and painted over with dead silence.
It was the acapella version of that drama theme song that had straight-up taken the world by storm back in the day—the exact same one Haruki was singin' at the Community Center the other day.
The heartbreakin'-*ss tone of Haruki's voice, her gaze, the way her hands reached out and struggled like she was burnin' for somethin' just out of reach, and her footsteps that moved as if she were still chasin' right after it, though.
'―Kohaku no yume~♪' (―An amber dream~♪)
Without a single-*ss piece of backup music, a whole fictional (drama) world was bein' spun into existence purely by Haruki's body alone.
The locals, who'd straight-up been dragged into another world out of nowhere, couldn't take their eyes off the witch (Haruki) who was working that spell. Every single-*ss person even forgot to breathe, completely-*ss hypnotized.
'―Midori no tegami, kokoro ni nomikomu…♪' (――Swallowin' the green letter whole into my heart…♪)
Before long, Haruki wrapped up the song.
Everyone had straight-up been swallowed whole by Haruki.
Their hearts were still totally-*ss locked in Haruki's grip.
The lingerin'-*ss vibe wasn't anywhere near coolin' down, but they were just standin' there frozen on the spot, completely-*ss dazed and not knowin' what the heck to do.
Haruki gave a quick-*ss polite bow to the crowd around her.
But that straight-up wasn't the cue for the end.
―The Openin' Act.
That was exact-*ssly when those words flashed through Hayato's mind.
Chime! The crisp sound of a bell rang out.
Along with it, the mysterious, mystical-*ss girl who appeared from the Haiden—Saki—straight-up sliced right through the world Haruki had just spun up.
Everyone's attention shifted straight-up toward Saki.
Gulp, throats cleared all around.
Right then, Haruki, who'd slipped right back next to Hayato, whispered out of the blue in a quiet, straight-up solemn tone.
"Hey, Hayato. Make sure you keep your eyes locked tight on Saki-chan, alright?"
Author's Notes:
I'm gonna keep bustin' my *ss at this exact pace until the very end of Part 4.
