"Somethin' like that is straight-up―"

―Somethin' I don't d*mn need to be told, though. But Hayato couldn't straight-up finish gettin' the words out to the very end.

Haruki's gaze was locked dead-straight onto Saki, every single-*ss muscle in her body tensin' up tight.

Haruki's face looked so crazy serious that after a split second of hesitation, Hayato followed her lead and locked in too.

Before long, along with the sound of the flute played by the head priest, the Kagura dance officially-*ss kicked off.

Underneath the star-filled sky where the curtain of night had fallen, the bonfires lit up Saki, who was the absolute star of the show.

That was a dance passed down all the way from the Heian Period—from a mind-numbin'ly ancient-*ss time in the past.

A story representin' the wild-*ss events that went down on this very land in the ancient days.

By some crazy-*ss twist of fate, it was the exact same kind of story as the song Haruki had just sung for the opening act.

Along with the crisp-*ss, sharp ringin' of the bells, Saki danced on.

Vividly, beautifully, and glamorously-*ss.

Sweet yet heartbreakin', full of longin', and straight-up painful.

Joy, grief, and yearnin'.

Saki was bringin' all kinds of emotional-*ss scenes to life through her dance.

It was a performance Hayato'd caught countless-*ss times since he was a little kid, but Saki this year was straight-up more vibrant and alive than she'd ever d*mn been before.

Before Hayato could even stop himself, a gasp of total-*ss awe slipped right out of Hayato's mouth, "Oh."

"…Yep, Saki-chan's straight-up different from me after all, huh."

"Haruki?"

"I mean, just look…"

Saying that, Haruki took a quick-*ss glance around at the crowd.

Just like durin' Haruki's turn, every single-*ss person's eyes were glued straight onto Saki, but the corners of their mouths were soft, lettin' out dazed gasps and sighs like "Wow" and "Man." ―Just straight-up like Hayato.

Seein' that go down, Haruki let out a tiny, self-deprecatin'-*ss laugh.

"My performance, y'know, is just a put-on show meant for some random-*ss people whose names and faces I don't even d*mn know. But Saki-chan's? That's straight-up comin' from the heart, meant entirely for the person she actually-*ss wants to reach."

"Somethin' l―"

―Somethin' like that is straight-up wrong, but the words after that just wouldn't d*mn come out.

Hayato had genuinely-*ss lost his words this time around.

What suddenly-*ss flashed through Hayato's mind was the image of Haruki ever since they reunited—wearin' a mask (cat) of fake smiles everywhere she goes, just driftin' along by brushin' people off casually, and bein' completely-*ss isolated and alone despite bein' the kind of person everyone looks up to from afar.

Right now, Haruki was wearin' that exact-*ss stiff smile.

On pure impulse, Hayato reached his hand out, but his fingers straight-up sliced through thin air.

Huh? While Hayato stood there lookin' completely-*ss caught off guard, Haruki shifted her gaze toward Saki as if to guide his eyes there, and whispered.

"Hayato, please keep your eyes on Saki-chan."

"…"

Those eyes of Hayato's were straight-up capturin' Saki and nobody else.

Before long, along with the crisp-*ss ring of the bell, the Kagura dance came to an end.

Right at that exact second, a massive-*ss round of applause and cheers straight-up erupted from the crowd.

"Saki-chan, you k*lled it again this year!"

"Man, there's no way we could've straight-up wrapped up the Festival without catchin' this show!"

"Alright, whose house are we headin' to next to keep the drinks flowin'!?"

The Festival officially-*ss called it quits, and the world started driftin' right back into everyday routine.

In the middle of all that, Hayato was just standin' there, lookin' a tiny-*ss bit dazed.

It felt like some d*mn gears weren't clickin' right—No, more like they'd straight-up been shifted out of place on purpose.

Inside Hayato's chest, all kinds of wild-*ss emotions were spinnin' around like a total whirlpool.

"Hayato, wanna head over to Saki-chan's spot?"

"Oh—Yeah, sure."

But Haruki didn't give a single d*mn about how Hayato was feelin', straight-up grabbin' his wrist and draggin' him along.

Saki was sittin' on a wooden bench right by the Kagura stage, stuffin' her face with inarizushi.

The second Saki noticed Haruki walkin' up while wavin' her hand, Saki quickly-*ss swallowed her food and tapped her chest a bunch of times.

"Great job out there, Saki-chan. You were straight-up massively-*ss wholesome!"

"Mmh, oh—Thank you so much! I mean, since Haruki-san did that whole crazy performance right before me, it straight-up made me way more nervous than usual this year, y'know!?"

"Ahaha, but hey, it got you totally-*ss fired up, right?"

"Oh, come on~!"

When Haruki struck up a convo in a casual-*ss tone, Saki puffed out her cheeks like a total kid and hit her with a judgin'-*ss side-eye in protest.

It was a side of Saki that totally matched her actual-*ss age—something she'd never d*mn shown Hayato before, since she was usually the reliable type.

There was a super comfy vibe between them, making it crystal clear that the distance between Haruki and Saki had straight-up shrunk in no time since Haruki came to Tsukinose.

"…By the way, wasn't Himeko just hangin' around right here a second ago?"

"Oh… …well, Hime-chan kind of, uh, ate way too d*mn much, so, y'know…"

"Ahaha, that is straight-up like Hime-chan."

Right then, Hayato smoothly slipped right into the convo too.

It was so effortlessly-*ss smooth it was almost anticlimactic; Exchangin' words like this with Saki was somethin' Hayato couldn't have even d*mn pictured before movin' back to Tsukinose.

This summer, this Festival—it was straight-up changin' somethin' about Hayato and the others in a massive-*ss way.

"Oh, right, Saki-chan. It's a day early, but since we're here, why don't we hand that over?"

"Eh? Oh—Yeah, let's!"

"So yeah, Hayato, just stay put and wait right there, okay!?"

"Oh—Hey, hold up!"

And just like that, Haruki grabbed Saki's hand and disappeared toward the housin' area in a d*mn flash.

Left completely-*ss behind by himself, Hayato stared down at the wrist Haruki had been grippin' until just a second ago, let out a massive-*ss sigh, and gave his head a rough scratch.

Hayato took a quick-*ss look around at the area.

The Festival was over, most of the food had straight-up been cleared away, and a ton of people were already headin' on their way back home.

The cracklin' bonfires were losin' their spark too, and they'd probably-*ss be completely dead out in about an hour or so.

It was, straight-up, the aftermath of the Festival.

Starin' at that scene just made Hayato feel a tiny-*ss bit lonely and sad.

Even more so because of the whole deal where Hayato had to head right back to the big city the day after tomorrow.

"Murao-san, huh…"

Inside Hayato's chest, everythin' was a total-*ss mess.

And out of all those feelin's, straight-up confusion was takin' up the most d*mn space.

A girl who, until now, felt so crazy close yet so d*mn far away at the exact same time.

Right as Hayato was twistin' his face up in a total frown, he caught the sound of Haruki shoutin' out, "Hey, over here!"

Shiftin' his gaze that way, Hayato saw Haruki draggin' Saki along, who was walkin' with her head completely-*ss down, making him knit his eyebrows together a bit.

The second they got right back in front of Hayato, Haruki wasted no d*mn time slipping right behind Saki's back and givin' Saki a hard-*ss shove forward.

"Alright, Saki-chan!"

"H-Haruki-san!"

"Eh… …what's goin' on here?"

Saki, who'd straight-up been pushed right into the space in front of Hayato's eyes, was clutchin' somethin' to her chest like it was a total prize.

Saki's cheeks were flushed a deep-*ss red, and her eyelashes were trembling like crazy while she kept her head tilted down.

Hayato took another proper-*ss look at Saki.

Fair-skinned and slender, wrapped in a mysterious vibe, Saki was an incredibly-*ss elegant girl with looks that didn't take a backseat to Haruki's at all.

When Saki started fidgetin' like that, tossin' Hayato occasional-*ss upward glances from under her bangs, it would've been straight-up impossible for anyone—not just Hayato—to keep their d*mn heart from skippin' a beat.

"Saki-chan."

"―!"

Haruki's voice straight-up pushed Saki from behind.

With that extra-*ss shove, Saki took a single step forward, and along with her tightly-*ss closed lips, she locked her droopy eyes straight onto Hayato. His heart gave a massive-*ss thump.

Then, Saki forcefully-*ss thrust out the thing she'd been clutchin' to her chest, almost slammin' it right into Hayato.

"I-It's a day early, but here's your birthday present!"

"…Huh?"

Author's Notes:

If everythin' goes smooth-*ssly, there are only 3 chapters left in Part 4. Probably.

Yip.
