Part Three"―Seriously, Your Vibe Hasn't Changed a Bit Since the Old Days!"Chapter 112Mask, Actin', Dominance
Both Haruki's mind and emotions were gettin' totally rocked.
Takura Mao―for Haruki, that's a name and a word that carries some heavy-*ss weight.
That connection has never been made public, and it's stayin' that way. It’s a total secret.
So, Haruki couldn't wrap her head around why the man in front of her just dropped that name right to her face. Well, actually, she could probably guess why. She just didn't even wanna go there.
Haruki was at her absolute breakin' point. Her nails dug so deep into her clenched fists that blood started to ooze out.
Haruki could feel her head goin' numb and cold real fast. Her ears, her brain, her whole heart were screamin' at her to deny what the man said (Takura Mao). But she had no clue what to do. No matter how hard she tried to think, she couldn't come up with a single comeback, and the panic just kept pilin' up. Her head was spinnin' out of control.
"You're―"
And yet, the very moment the man tried to keep talkin', Haruki reflexively threw on that "Good Girl Mask" that's basically baked into her DNA.
"I'm sorry, what are you talkin' about?"
"―!?"
Haruki's voice was incredibly graceful and crystal clear.
In an instant, the heavy tension in the air was completely painted over by Haruki's act.
The way Haruki said it sounded exactly like a totally clueless, innocent girl just askin' a question, and she had the presence to back it up. When she flashed a sweet smile and tilted her head to the side, the man literally forgot to breathe.
It was a perfect mimicry, a move Haruki'd polished through years of experience, capable of chamin' anyone who laid eyes on her.
The man's focus and eyes were pinned to Haruki, totally overwhelmed by her vibes.
"That's the name of an actress, right? I’m pretty out of the loop with that kinda stuff... ...and honestly, I'm not really interested, so, um, my apologies."
"...Eh, oh, well."
Even Haruki was totally weirded out by herself. She had zero clue why she'd suddenly flipped the switch to "Good Girl Mode."
Despite Haruki's emotions goin' absolutely haywire, her mind stayed eerily cold and sharp, calculatin' (actin') exactly how to set the stage so she could bail. It was such a ridiculous performance that she even disgusted herself. But man, she had that whole atmosphere under her thumb.
"Well then, I'll be goin' now."
Takin' advantage of the split second where the man was just standin' there dazed, Haruki gave a graceful smile, spun on her heel, and made her move to leave.
Haruki's movements were so smooth and elegant that it felt like the most natural thing in the world for the man to just stand there and let her go. For real, the man was actually mesmerized for a sec.
"...! Hey, wait up!"
The moment Haruki felt the man snap back to reality and shout at her back, she took off at a full-sprint. It was a total gut reaction.
(―!)
Haruki's head was an even bigger mess than before. She ran like she was tryin' to shake off the raw emotions makin' her skin crawl.
As the scenery blurred past, all Haruki felt floodin' into her chest was cravin', despair, terror, and a sense of bein' a total outcast. Or maybe just loneliness, grief, and the weight of havin' to stay a "Good Girl." Her mind was swamped with the memory of her Mom's eyes—lookin' at her over and over like she was just some nuisance, somethin' gross, or a problem she didn't wanna deal with.
All that cr*p Haruki thought she'd left behind since reconnectin' with Hayato was bein' ripped wide open again.
Haruki should've been used to this by now.
But Haruki's heart was hammerin' against her ribs harder than ever before. A nasty, cold sweat was pourin' down her back like a waterfall. Her pale lips started to bleed 'cause she was bitin' down on 'em way too hard.
(I—, by myself—, I can't, no, rely—, a burden―)
To anyone watchin', it was dead obvious that somethin' was seriously wrong.
I mean, pullin' a full-on sprint in a crowded-*ss mall like this? No way Haruki wasn't gonna stand out like a sore thumb.
But right now, Haruki didn't have the mental space to even care about how she looked to other people.
"Haruki!"
"...Eh?"
A voice—sharp but totally familiar—pierced through the noise and hit Haruki's ears. It was the one voice she wanted to hear more than anythin' else right now.
For a second, Haruki's brain just went blank. Her feet skidded to a halt. Before she even knew what was happenin', someone had a grip on her arm.
"Hey, what's wrong? What happened!?"
"Hayato...?"
When Haruki looked back, there was Hayato, lookin' totally out of breath.
Why? How the heck was Hayato here? This whole thing was so unexpected and worked out so perfectly in Haruki's favor that she couldn't even process what was goin' on.
But the way Hayato was lookin' at Haruki was so dead-serious that it actually helped her regain a bit of her cool.
Lookin' closer, Haruki could see both Kazuki and Iori trailin' behind Hayato, tryin' to catch up. Looks like they'd been hangin' out together.
Haruki looked down at the arm Hayato was still grippin'. When she looked at his face, she saw sweat beadon' on his forehead.
"..."
"Ahaha, well..."
The realization that Hayato'd put Haruki before the other boys made her feel a little spark of joy. She let out a self-deprecatin' laugh at how she was feelin', and the tension finally started to melt away.
They both just stared at each other. Haruki knew d*mn well she wasn't actin' normal a second ago.
Haruki felt like she had to explain somethin', and she tried to find the right words, but she just couldn't get 'em to come out right.
So, lookin' pretty lost, Haruki decided to just be straight about how she was feelin' right then.
"...I don't even know what’s goin' on myself."
"...Huh?"
Then, Haruki noticed somethin'. She started sniffin' the air. Her eyebrows furrowed, and she let out a total pouty voice.
"Smellin' like BBQ... ...that's so not fair."
"Oh, well, about that..."
"...Pfft."
Watchin' Hayato start to scramble like that, Haruki let out a playful smirk, even though her face still looked a bit troubled.
Author's Notes:
Work on Light Novel Volume 2 is officially underway! It's lookin' like it's gonna be way different from the WN version. I'm aimin' to make it even more fire specifically for the people who've already read the WN stuff.
Oh, and I hit up the home center the other day.
There was this Somali kitten who looked exactly like a fox, and guess what? He already found his forever home! Congrats, little guy! Meow!
I-If my books sell well, I'm totally gonna get myself a Norwegian Forest Cat boy...
Also, on March 25th (2021), "Kaiwa mo shinai Tsurego no Imouto ga, Naganen Issho ni Baka yatte kita Netoge no Fure datta" is comin' out! I really need this to sell so I can finally afford my own "Nyaan"!
I'm plannin' to drop some side stories for that one before the release date too! So yeah, please show 'em both some love!
By the way, regardin' the "Kaiwa mo Shinai" book, I actually had to sign over 100 copies!
Yep, like I mentioned before, my parents totally know my pen name!
So there I was, signin' away, while my Mom and Dad kept comin' up to me individually like, "Yo, for a pen name signature, I think it'd be cool if you did it like this," and I'm just there like AH!!!
...Just... ...k*ll me now...
Oh, and for some consolation, I'd be hyped if you changed those empty stars (☆☆☆☆☆) to solid ones (★★★★★). It'd totally bring me back to life!!!
Translator's Notes:
As for the "Kaiwa mo Shinai" WN, we will also translated to English, but maybe after we finished "Tenbin Part Four". Thank you for sticking with us by reading until this far. See you guys on the next one!
