Part Three"―Seriously, Your Vibe Hasn't Changed a Bit Since the Old Days!"Chapter 89Which One?
Hayato got home way later than he usually did.
It was long past the time school let out, but the summer sun was still hanging high, and the western sky still held a hint of blue.
"I'm home."
"Mmh, welcome back, Big Bro. You're late today."
"I was getting a new key made for myself. Plus, I had to grab some groceries for dinner."
"Hm, okay."
Himeko greeted her big bro in the living room, but her response was totally half-hearted and she didn't even look his way. Her eyes and her whole brain were glued to the TV screen.
What was playing was the anime series of the movie they'd gone to see the other day. Himeko probably borrowed it from Haruki.
"...Don't overdo it, alright?"
"I know, I know, Big Bro."
Hayato just sighed at his little sis—who was supposed to be grinding for her entrance exams—as he set the groceries down in the kitchen.
(...Man, that Haruki girl...)
Thinking about giving Haruki a piece of his mind after what happened during lunch, Hayato headed to his room, bag in hand.
"...Huh?"
"...~~Gah!!??"
The second Hayato swung the door open, he froze dead in his tracks.
For some reason, right there in front of Hayato was Haruki, mid-way through taking off her school blouse. One sleeve was already off, leaving her pretty much half-naked. Hayato couldn't help but gulp.
Haruki's smooth, pale skin that almost looked translucent, her collarbones, the curve of her waist, and even her belly button—all those usually hidden spots showed off a fragile, dangerous beauty like a budding flower, something you only see in girls her age.
And when that plain but cute off-white thing with frill accents, wrapping around Haruki's slightly-smaller-than-average curves, flashed before his eyes... ...honestly, you couldn't blame Hayato—or anyone else, for that matter—for not being able to look away.
After a split second of dead silence, both their faces turned beet-red as their brains finally started working again.
"S-Sorry!"
Hayato slammed the door shut in a panic and turned his back to it like he wasn't allowed to even look in that direction.
Hayato's heart was pounding so hard against his ribs that he was worried Haruki could hear it through the door, and his ears—which had suddenly become hyper-sensitive—could clearly pick up the rustling of her clothes.
The image of a bashful Haruki clutching her blouse to her chest to cover herself just as Hayato shut the door was burned into his mind, and it wasn't going anywhere.
(What the heck is this...?)
Hayato was totally lost.
Like, why? What was Haruki even doing in there? A million questions started popping up.
But more than that, Hayato was just plain rattled because he was feeling Haruki's "girliness" through her well-toned body more than ever before.
A little while later, the door creaked open, and Haruki peeked out with a totally awkward look on her face.
"S-Sorry you had to see... ...eh, all that ugliness..."
"Nah, it's fine... ...Were you just changing clothes?"
"Yeah, I mean, school uniforms are just so stiff, and plus, it's freaking hot out, right?"
With that, Haruki did a little twirl.
Haruki'd swapped her usual uniform for a sleeveless tunic with floral accents along the hem and a breezy mini skirt.
It looked like loungewear, but it was casual and low-key cute enough to wear for a quick grocery run or something.
Probably 'cause of what he just saw, Hayato was feeling Haruki's "girliness" way too much and had to look away. He could tell he was starting to sound a bit blunt.
"I get that, but... ...Why the heck are you in my room?"
"I figured if I changed in Hime-chan's room, our clothes might get all mixed up and it'd be a pain... ...Oh, and I already stashed a few of my outfits in here, by the way."
"...Without even asking me first?"
"Hehe. Hey, if you're curious, you can try 'em on too, you know? Being a girl is actually pretty fun."
"Heck no. Besides, they wouldn't even fit."
"Man, Hayato, you've really gotten huge, haven't you?"
Haruki flashed Hayato a carefree grin, stood up on her tiptoes, and held her hand out to compare her height with his.
Seeing Haruki's act like nothing had happened made Hayato feel like he was the only one getting all worked up, and it felt totally awkward.
That's why Hayato felt this weird surge of competitiveness.
The kind of thing Hayato usually would've kept his mouth shut about.
"So, you were wearing something pretty d*mn cute today, weren't you?"
"~~Wha—!!??"
Haruki's face flushed beet-red the second Hayato dug that topic back up, and she froze in shock. Her eyes were wide as saucers.
Hayato smirked, thinking he'd successfully pulled off a petty revenge, but Haruki's comeback was totally unexpected.
"...Is it... ...weird?"
"!!??"
When Haruki asked that with a look of worry on her face, giving Hayato those vulnerable puppy-dog eyes, it was Hayato's turn to lose his cool.
"Oh—no, I-It's not like that... ...I think it, eh, looks good on you."
"I see... ...Then, um, between the one from the movie the other day and this one, which one do you think suits me better...?"
"You idi—... ...I mean, they're both, you know, 'that', alright?"
"Oh, 'that', huh... ...So, between 'that one' and 'this one' right now, which one is more your type...?"
"H-Haruki...!? No, I mean, eh, well..."
Hayato tried his best to get things back to normal, but he just couldn't pull it off. He couldn't even look Haruki in the eye. He was getting swallowed up by this weird, suffocating vibe.
Hayato kept thinking, "This totally isn't like me."
And yet, Hayato felt like this vibe wasn't half bad, which just went to show that something deep inside him was down bad without him even realizing it.
"Big Bro, I'm hungry—wait, what are you two even doing?"
""!!?""
Suddenly, that whole mood was shattered by Himeko, who'd reached a stopping point in her anime.
Hayato and Haruki scrambled to put some space between them, acting super sketchy for a second, but they quickly traded looks and gave each other a nod to figure out a game plan.
"W-Well, we were just talking about what to fix for dinner."
"Y-Yeah, exactly. My diet's over and all, but I'm still worried about the rebound... ...Hime-chan, you got any requests?"
"I want meat!"
That kind of instant teamwork was only possible because it was both Hayato and Haruki. Luckily, Himeko was pretty simple-minded. They both let out a huge sigh of relief.
Himeko started to head back to her anime, but then she stopped in her tracks and turned around like she'd just remembered something.
"Oh, right! Hey Big Bro, Haru-chan, wanna start a GC?"
""A GC?""
Hayato and Haruki just stared at each other, totally clueless about that abbreviation.
Watching the two of them act like that, Himeko let out a "good grief" sigh and flashed a smug look that was honestly pretty annoying.
"A group chat! Y'know, where a bunch of people message each other at the same time."
