Hayato felt out of place all day, keeping his brows knit in a permanent scowl.

As for Haruki, the one who caused all this mess, she was constantly swarmed by the girls and grilled with questions, while the boys shot her looks of pure grief, praying it was all just some huge mistake.

The second those boys' eyes landed on Hayato in the seat next to Haruki, their gaze turned sharp enough to stab him. Watching them flip the script that fast made Hayato let out a sigh loaded with all kinds of emotions.

The girls' "interrogation" of Haruki was less of a grilling and more about them getting a kick out of how she'd panic and turn beet-red every time they asked something. Honestly, it was kinda cute, like they were teasing a mascot or something.

But watching them refuse to let Haruki go, one boy joked, "Didn't think I'd see a game of Kagome Kagome in high school," which actually made Hayato burst out laughing.

"U-Um, I have this thing with that stuff, so I gotta go!"

As soon as school was out, Haruki bolted from the classroom.

Guess Haruki was totally wiped out from being teased and grilled all day long.

Watching Haruki flee the room like a bat out of heck, Hayato grabbed his bag with a "good grief" look on his face, rolling a key with no keychain around in his palm. It was the spare master key he kept at home just in case.

(...Man, Haruki totally brought that on herself, what a dummy.)

Even though Hayato was low-key trash-talking Haruki in his head, the memory of her looking all flustered while everyone showered her with friendly smiles made a chuckle escape his throat.

"Yo, you headin' out already?"

"Oh, Mori. Yeah, I've got somewhere to stop by besides just grabbing groceries for dinner."

"Aw man, and here I was thinking about making you settle your debt today."

"...Yeah, just put it on my tab for now."

"You got it! I'll be looking forward to it."

Hayato winced for a sec at the word "debt" that Mori Iori dropped so casually, but then Hayato quickly remembered how much Iori had actually helped Hayato out today. Hayato gave his head a little shake with a wry smile, flashed a quick wave, and dipped out of the classroom.

The only reason Hayato didn't get grilled as hard as Haruki by everyone today was straight-up thanks to both Mori Iori and Kazuki.

Mori Iori had been slick about asking questions that were easy to dodge while satisfying everyone's curiosity, and once Kazuki started yapping about how close they'd gotten after hanging out the other day, everyone's interest shifted. Instead of digging into Hayato's deal with Haruki, the convo pivoted to Hayato's infamously monotone singing voice, and he even got roped into performing it.

Hayato ended up getting teased like crazy in a totally different way, but yeah, he definitely had a huge debt to those two.

With that on his mind, Hayato headed toward the station front. There was a locksmith there he'd used right after he moved in.

"Wait, did Hayato-kun already head home...?"

Just as Hayato had dipped out, Kazuki showed up at the classroom.

Kazuki looked around the room, but when he couldn't spot his target, he made a bit of a bummed-out face.

Noticing that, Mori Iori gave a quick wave as if to ask what was up.

"Said Kirishima had some errands to run. Anyway, rare to see you here after school, what about your club activity?"

"I mean, finals are right around the corner, so... ...Oh, I see, so Hayato-kun isn't here..."

"...Kazuki?"

Seeing Kazuki act like he had something stuck in his throat, Mori Iori shot Kazuki a suspicious look.

Caught in the act, Kazuki shrugged awkwardly and then shifted his gaze toward Isami Ema, who was busy chatting away with a group of girls.

"Well, I guess it's just a matter of time now."

Kazuki beckoned Mori Iori over, who looked totally clueless about what was going on, and discreetly showed Kazuki his smartphone screen so no one else could see.

Mori Iori's eyes nearly popped out of his head, and Kazuki let out a dry laugh.

"This is... ....wow, haha."

"Yeah, well. It got passed around by this girl named Torigai-san who's got a little sis in middle school."

What was displayed on the screen was a photo of Hayato in an outfit he didn't usually wear, getting cornered and chewed out by Himeko in front of a movie theater.

Even though she was "scolding" Hayato, Himeko's face looked more like she was just pouting, and Hayato seemed to be soothing her like he was playing along with a kid. It was crystal clear how close they were. Besides, Haruki had shown photos of Himeko to everyone around them plenty of times before.

Who knows where this is gonna lead.

Mori Iori exchanged a wry smile with Kazuki, and the two of them just shrugged at each other.
