Chapter 151
Haruki-san is a Straight-Up Idiot
With a massive-ss roaring sound, the heavy-ss storm was straight-up batterin' against the storm shutters.
The mountains of Tsukinose looked like they were straight-up singin' and dancin' with the typhoon in some kind of wild-ss crazy party.
The sky was completely-ss swallowed up by thick, black clouds, throwing a dark shadow over the whole world even though it was way too damn early to be evening yet.
The lights inside Saki's room were already-ss flipped on.
In a corner of the spot, a kitten was wrapped up snug in a blanket inside a cardboard box, letting out soft, perfectly-ss rhythmic snoozes.
It was a crazy peaceful, cute-ss sight that would straight-up make anyone lookin' at it melt into a puddle.
"…"
Despite that bein' the case, Haruki just kept starin' down at the kitten with a dead-ss stiff expression on her face.
Right then, the slidin' door swang open with a soft clack, and Saki popped her head in.
The second Saki caught a glimpse of the kitten's sleeping face, her whole face totally-ss softened up into a big grin, and she dropped herself down right next to Haruki to start chattin'.
"Out like a light, huh? Eh, let me guess... ...it was low blood sugar and dehydration symptoms, right?"
"Yeah, looks like it hadn't eaten or drank a dmn thing for a hot minute. So they said as long as we keep it warm and feed it kitten formula, it's gonna be totally fine. Turns out it’s a crazy-ss tough and strong baby, way more than we thought."
"I see. That's awesome for you, little kitty… ...Hehehe."
Sayin' that, Saki cautiously-ass poked the sleeping kitten's ear with her index finger, lookin' low-key scared.
The second the kitten's ear gave a sudden-ss twitch like it was ticklish, Saki's eyes straight-up lit up as she went, "Whoa!"
A tiny-ss spark of life.
Saki's eyes completely-ss softened up, feelin' a massive wave of relief from the bottom of her heart that the baby made it.
Saki started flashin' back to what went down just a split second ago.
The whole dmn thing started with a phone call from Hayato.
'Murao-san, it's weak, the cat, it's tiny, eh, somehow, look, right now, straight-up help me out!"
Those were Hayato's completely-ss scrambled, nonsensical words, thrown out in a tone that was desperately-ss tryin' to play it cool.
Saki still clearly-ss remembers blurtin' out, 'Eh, wait, can you please-ss chill out for a second?!'
Looks like Hayato was straight-up panicking that hard back then, but even so, Saki low-key thought his stubborn-ss effort to still act like a proper big bro just like always was kinda heartwarmin' and sweet.
And man, that freezin'-ss sensation that crawled straight up Saki's spine when she first saw that limp-ss kitten wasn't somethin' she could just clean forget.
An instinctual-ss terror that if Saki just sat on her hands and did nothin', that tiny life was gonna vanish to a place way past her reach.
The exact-ss same brand of fear Saki felt 2 months ago, when Hayato straight-up vanished from right in front of her eyes.
That's why Saki went all out too, frantically-ss leanin' on anyone she could find.
From there, it turned into a massive-ss community uproar, draggin' in all kinds of people just to save one fadin' kitten.
Old Man Gen, who just happened to be rollin' by, drove his car all the way to the next town over the mountain for 'em; Kanehachi-san immediately-ss blasted off in his pickup truck to go huntin' for kitten supplies; and Hayato straight-up sprinted out to the fields to prep 'em for the typhoon, coverin' for the folks who were too busy helping out with the cat.
And then, the local Tsukinose vet—the same dude who low-key helped 'em deliver a sheep the other day—managed to patch the baby up and string its life back together, even though he went, 'Man, it's straight-up been a hot minute since I last looked at a cat.'
That right there was the actual-ss result of Saki reachin' out her own hand and grabbin' hold of that fate.
So when Saki looks at the kitten right in front of her now, she feels a tiny-ss bit proud of herself.
"Saki-chan, I'm so sorry…"
"Huh?"
Just as Saki was narrowin' her eyes all sentimental-ss, Haruki straight-up apologized out of nowhere.
Puzzled as heck, Saki peered at Haruki's profile, only to see Haruki starin' down at the kitten while throwing off some heavy-ss dark shadows.
Noticin' Saki's gaze on her, Haruki forced a fake-ss smile onto her face and muttered all weak-like.
"Well, y'know... ...because of my selfish demand, I straight-up dragged all these people into it. On top of that, I didn't even do a dmn thing myself except run around panicking, so it's like everyone else did the heavy liftin' for me… …I really-ss put a huge burden on you guys."
Haruki lowered her head down crazy deep.
Haruki's shoulders were hunched up small, and her back was low-key trembling a bit too.
Haruki looked straight-up like a little kid who was terrified of gettin' chewed out―and then, out of nowhere, the image of a young Haruki clutchin' her knees under the moonlight, surrounded by sunflowers, overlapped right over her.
That sight of someone unable to reach what they desired, yet completely unable to clean give up on it, matched perfectly.
Because of that, Saki instinctually-ss pulled Haruki into a tight-ss hug, burying Haruki's head right in.
"This ain't a burden or any dmn thing like that."
"S-Saki-chan?!"
"People saved it simply-ss because they wanted to save it. Me, Hime-chan, Hayato, Shinta, Old Man Gen, Kanehachi-san, and the Vet too. For sure, even the sheep probably felt the same way… …You were straight-up just the spark that started it, Haruki-san."
"Is that… …really how it is…?"
"Did you see a single-ss person makin' a disgusted face out there? Was there anyone who thought it was totally fine for the kitten to just vanish into thin air? When everyone found out it was safe, was there a single-ss person who didn't celebrate?"
"N-No, everyone was straight-up saying they were glad…"
Desperately-ss hopin' her actual feelings would get through, Saki gently-ss stroked Haruki's head as she held her close.
Haruki's shoulders gave a sudden-ss twitch for a split second, but then she completely-ss let go of her tension and melted right into the hug, exactly-ss like a cat that had finally dropped its guard.
After stayin' like that for a hot minute, Haruki, with her face still completely-ss buried, tightly-ass grabbed the hem of Saki's shirt.
"But I just-ss can't stop overthinking it… …If it's at my house, there's zero way I can keep it if Mom finds out, and Hayato's place is an apartment where pets are a straight-up no-go! I just saved it out of my own dmn selfish urge, but bein' this irresponsible is messed up! I am… …seriously… …the absolute-ss worst!"
Haruki screamed out like she was straight-up blamin' herself.
You could tell all kinds of frustrated-ss emotions were spinning out of control inside Haruki's voice.
Starin' at Haruki actin' like that, Saki blinked her eyes in total surprise―and then, Saki knitted her brows.
Right after, Saki dropped a soft-*ss knuckle-sandwich punch right on Haruki's head.
"Take that!"
"?!"
"Haruki-san, you're a straight-up idiot."
"Saki-chan…?"

I was low-key plannin' to just breeze right through the whole deal about saving the kitty as a minor thing, but since I ended up buildin' the lore and settings crazy deep… …I'm straight-up like, "Yo, it's probably way better to aggressively-ass add more to this scene in the Light Novel volume version, right?" So yeah, that's where I'm at.
