~Save That Old Energy Only For Me, Seriously!~
Chapter 73
It's My Best Work Ever, Right?

The moonless night in Tsukinose was pitch black.

Since it was cloudy tonight, the countryside was swallowed by a darkness so deep it looked like someone had spilled ink everywhere.

"Ugh..."

In a room inside the residential wing of the shrine up in the Tsukinose mountains, Saki let out a heavy sigh, her face looking just as gloomy as the darkness outside.

Like a student grinding for entrance exams, she was hunched over her desk, groaning at her open notebook. It was covered in crossed-out lines and red annotations, showing just how "tough" this problem really was.

'As we reach the height of summer, I hope this finds you, Hayato-san, in the best of health and spirits. Regarding the diet recipes I sent the other day, how have they been working out for you? If there are any issues or if you need anything else, please let me know. I have already picked out and prepared a few more options. Please excuse the messy writing. Murao Saki.'

It was a draft of a message Saki was planning to send to Hayato.

It was Saki's best work ever—the result of her constantly hitting the dictionary and searching online to check the meanings and notes of words she wasn't even used to using.

But sadly, it sounded more like a formal business e-mail, and there was no way anyone would think this was a message from a middle school girl to her bestie's big bro.

"How the heck am I even supposed to send a message like this?!"

Saki wailed, slumping onto her desk like a wet noodle with tears welling up in her eyes.

In the days since Saki'd sent those diet recipes and that selfie, she'd been stuck in a loop of typing out messages to Hayato only to delete them over and over again.

Back when Hayato was still in Tsukinose, Saki and Hayato didn't really have much in common to begin with.

It's not like they shared any hobbies, and at most, the only thing they could even talk about was Himeko. But since Himeko was living so far away now, there wasn't exactly a lot of daily gossip to chat about.

(What if we just drift apart again like this...?)

Self-doubt started creeping into Saki's heart.

It was crystal clear that the fragile connection Saki'd finally managed to grab with Hayato would just vanish into thin air, just like before, if she didn't do something.

But that was the one thing Saki couldn't accept. She absolutely couldn't let that happen.

'Whoa, awesome! You're not just pretty, you look totally badass!'

Saki remembered Hayato's words from back then.

They were magic words that had shaken and transformed all kinds of emotions within Saki—surprise, joy, confusion, excitement, shame, and longing.

When you change, the world changes with you.

The support from Saki's family, the subtle care and love hidden within the practice sessions she'd thought were just brutal, and the affectionate gaze of the villagers watching over her with high hopes.

Those were the things Saki'd finally started to notice, all thanks to those words.

To Saki, Hayato was such a massive, special presence in her life that calling him her "savior" didn't even cover it.

Saki wanted to get closer. But she was totally fed up with herself for not being able to act normal around Hayato.

"I want to talk to Hime-chan about it... ...but that's basically the same as admitting I like her Big Bro... ...wait, what?"

Just then, Saki's smartphone buzzed with a new message.

The sender was Himeko. Since Saki'd literally just been thinking about her bestie, she felt a little embarrassed, almost like her mind had been read.

"What in the world is... ...th... ...h—~~~?!?!"

Saki just froze. Honestly, she didn't have much of a choice.

'Big Bro isn't half bad after all, don't you think?'

Attached to the message was a photo of Hayato with a confused look on his face—an expression Saki'd never seen before.

Hayato's hair wasn't the messy, overgrown mop Saki remembered. Instead, it was styled perfectly from root to tip, giving him a totally natural and fresh vibe.

On top of that, with Hayato's clean features that looked just like Himeko's, his collarbones peeking out from an oversized lounge shirt, and his toned physique... ...he actually looked kind of hot.

It was a total transformation. The once plain and simple Hayato had turned into a legit good-looking boy in that picture.

(Hawa—hawawawa, wh-what the heck is this...?!)

To Saki, that photo was nothing short of a lethal weapon.

After a split second of dead silence, Saki's heart went into overdrive, making her entire body turn beet red.

Saki could only lean in and stare intensely at the smartphone screen gripped in both her hands, her whole body trembling uncontrollably. Her heart was pounding so hard it actually started to hurt.

Driven by pure, unadulterated emotion, Saki couldn't stop herself from calling Himeko right then and there.

'Oh, Saki-chan? So, did you see it? Big Bro actually looks pretty decen—'

"Th-This is scandalous!"

'—Sc-Scanda... ...what? S-Saki-chan?!'

"...Oh, no, I mean..."

Saki'd ended up shouting way louder than she'd intended.

Regaining a tiny bit of her cool after that impulsive scream, Saki cleared her throat. Then, she decided to ask about something that had been bugging her.

"I-I was just so surprised since it was out of the blue. B-But, I was just wondering why your Big Bro suddenly ended up like this..."

Unlike Saki's outburst earlier, her voice got quieter and quieter toward the end.

Thinking back, the Hayato Saki knew was totally indifferent when it came to fashion. She'd never even seen him show a hint of interest in it.

So why the sudden glow-up? All kinds of nasty scenarios started swirling around in Saki's head.

'Oh, that? We're going to the movies together soon, and I don't really want to be seen with some boy who looks like a total dork, right? So I gave Big Bro a little makeover. It's my best work ever, if I do say so myself!'

"O-Oh, I see. It really caught me off guard... ...um, well, how should I put it... ...your Big Bro looks really cool."

'Hoo-hoo, looks like we got Saki-chan's official seal of approval. Oh, I should totally tell Big Bro. He had this awkward look on his face earlier, so this'll cheer him up.'

"W-Wait! You don't have to go that far!"

Once Saki heard the story from Himeko, Saki's mood did a total 180. A wave of relief washed over Saki, followed by intense embarrassment because she'd accidentally admitted Hayato looked cool.

Looks like Saki's emotions are all over the place tonight.

'But the clothes Big Bro has are all pretty mid. I guess I'll have to work with what he's got... ...Oh, by the way, I have some other shots from when I was messing with his hair. Do you want another serving of Big Bro's photos?'

"!!"

For Saki, there was only one possible answer to that question.

Just imagining Hayato with all those different hairstyles was enough to send Saki into a total frenzy. She was so out of it that she didn't even notice her Mom calling from downstairs—who, by the way, totally thought Saki was up there grinding for her entrance exams.

"Saki~, I made you a midnight snack~"

"I want seconds too, please!!"

"S-Saki?! You want seconds already?!"

―A little later that night, there was Saki, clutching her stomach after polishing off two whole servings of nabeyaki udon, whimpering a "thanks for the meal" while practically half-crying from being so stuffed.

Author's Notes:

It's been a minute since we've had a Saki chapter, huh?

Feels like being spellbound by a fox. Kon! (Fox bark).
