Part Two
~Save That Old Energy Only For Me, Seriously!~
Chapter 66
The Giant Theater

Teased by Haruki, Hayato scrambled back into the kitchen.

Tonight's main course was Bangbangji using chicken breast.

Hayato boiled the meat in a large pot with some sake and green onion tops, let it cool down, and then shredded it by hand. On top of that, he had to julienne and slice a whole bunch of onions, carrots, radishes, cucumbers, tomatoes, and shiso leaves.

For the sauce, Hayato minced some more green onions and ginger, mixing them with sesame paste, soy sauce, mirin, and doubanjiang chili paste.

Anyway, it was a ton of prep work with all that chopping.

But the finished Bangbangji was cool, spicy, and totally hit the spot—a perfect dish for the summer heat. Plus, it's low-fat and high-protein, making it great for anyone on a diet.

That, paired with some Chinese-style seaweed and egg drop soup, made up tonight's dinner.

"Down the hatch! Oh, Big Bro, you didn't put any tomatoes in mine, right?"

"...If you find any, just toss 'em onto my plate."

"Mmm, so good! Wait, huh? Is there no rice today?"

"I've got some instant rice packs in the pantry if you want."

"Since I'm on a diet, I guess I can do without it tonight."

While Hayato and Himeko were eating like everything was normal, Haruki was off to the side, radiating a total aura of gloom all by herself.

"Ugh..."

"...Big Bro, what's up with Haru-chan?"

"Oh, that..."

Himeko whispered secretly into Hayato's ear.

Since they were getting right into it, Hayato had asked Haruki to help out with a few things while he was busy chopping ingredients.

Hayato asked Haruki to wash the rice, but for some reason, she just hit the "Keep Warm" button.

Hayato asked Haruki to change the vacuum filter, but she accidentally let it slip and... ...yeah, total disaster.

Hayato asked Haruki to run the laundry, but she completely forgot the detergent.

Haruki was so down to help with the chores, but she just kept racking up these classic rookie mistakes. Honestly, Haruki's always been pretty handy since they were kids. You can tell just by looking at how she pulls off that "perfect student" act nowadays. But it's also a fact that when she gets too hyped up, she ends up tripping over her own feet and making dumb blunders.

(Now that I think about it, even back then, whenever Haruki'd start a new game, she'd always die a bunch of pointless deaths in the beginning because she was too fired up.)

Hayato remembered that and let out a little chuckle.

Seeing Hayato like that just made Haruki slouch her shoulders even more.

"Eh—so, how's the food today? It's my first time making this, is it to your liking?"

"...It's frustrating."

"I see, frustrating, huh?"

Normally, Hayato would've jumped in with a comeback, telling whoever said that to cut the cheesy jokes.

Just when Hayato thought they were back to their usual selves, this happened. Hayato couldn't help but let out a long sigh too.

Meanwhile, Himeko watched Haruki, nodding along with a smug look on her face.

"Yeah, yeah, I totally get it. That's why I gave up a long time ago."

"But Hime-chan, you're younger—you're Hayato's little sis. I'm the same age as him, you know?"

"Oh, I guess that's a thing for you, Haru-chan~"

"That's why I'm gonna keep trying... ...Tonight's food is so good too, it's honestly annoying, right?"

"Totally~."

"...What the heck are you girls even talking about?"

Just as Hayato thought this vague, random convo was getting started, the two girls were already nodding in total agreement.

Hayato didn't really get what was going on, but more importantly, he had something he needed to say today.

"Hey, you girls free this coming day off?"

"Hmm, the game update is still a ways off, but I've got a mission to clear my backlog of games, manga, and anime. Since I've been hanging out at your place so much lately, everything's just been piling up."

In other words, Haruki was basically saying she had zero plans. But Haruki's face was so weirdly deadpan and serious that Hayato wasn't sure if she was actually joking or not.

"I see... ...No, I just thought if you girls were free, we could head out somewhere and have some fun."

"Wait, I'm in! I'm definitely going, so let's do it!"

"O-Oh, you sure about that?"

"Heck yeah!!"

Haruki totally bit the bait.

The gloom from earlier had vanished into thin air. Haruki's eyes were practically sparkling, and she was leaning halfway across the dining table.

It was a total 180 in personality. And yet, for some reason, Hayato felt a weird sense of deja vu.

(Oh, right...)

Back when they were little kids, during the time they lived in Tsukinose.

Haruki used to look depressed and dark just like she did a moment ago.

Now, Hayato could guess that it was all because of her family situation.

But back then, there was no way Hayato would've understood any of that. He just kept asking Haruki to play because he wanted to be with her—and all he ever saw was her smile.

In the end, that was all there was to it. It was simple.

Hayato scratched his head aggressively, thinking he should've asked Haruki sooner.

"So, Hayato. Where are we going? Oh, did you hear about a cool spot or something?!"

"Nah, not at all. Actually, it's more like I asked because I don't know any... ...Do you know anywhere good, Haruki?"

"Ugh, I mean, I'm more of an indoor person, so, eh..."

"Right, I forgot..."

They wanted to go out, but they had no clue where to go or even how to have a good time. Hayato and Haruki were really showing off how useless they could be.

Still, as they tried to work out a plan, both of their faces were practically beaming with smiles.

That was definitely a testament to just how strong the bond between them really was.

(Oh, right...)

Just as Hayato remembered a few spots Mori Iori had told him about and went to open the notes on his smartphone.

Himeko, with a dead-serious look on her face, called out "Me!" and shot her hand straight up in the air.

"I wanna go to the movies."

"The movies? Himeko, is there something you wanna see?"

"758 people."

"Huh?"

"I heard there's a theater with 758 seats, where that many people can all watch a movie at the same time. Hey, hey, doesn't that sound cool?"

"No way! You're telling me more than half the population of Tsukinose can watch a movie all at once?!"

Back in Tsukinose, "movies" basically meant either renting a DVD or streaming something online. In other words, they were things you watched at home.

To make matters worse, the nearest movie theater was a two-hour drive away, and even then, it was just a tiny indie theater that was barely bigger than a school classroom.

That's why for Hayato, and Himeko too, a movie theater that could hold half the population of their old countryside was a total mystery—but man, were they hooked on the idea.

"Don't you wanna see how huge it is? I’ve gotta go there at least once!"

"True that. If it's really that big, it's definitely something you gotta see once in your life. You cool with that, Haruki?"

"...Oh, eh, yeah. I'm totally down."

"Hey, hey, do you think they actually sell popcorn there?"

"Forget the snacks, what about the immersive stuff... ...4D... ...apparently there are all kinds of versions, but what does that even mean?!"

"..."

While Hayato and Himeko were geeking out over the movie theater, Haruki just stood there blinking, looking like she'd been hit by a total bolt from the blue.

Haruki had this look on her face like she'd just realized how much she'd slipped up and jumped to conclusions.

"...So, of course, Hime-chan is coming along too, right?"

"Duh, Haruki. Why wouldn't Himeko?"

"Nah, it's nothing."

With that, Haruki just gave Hayato a faint, awkward smile.

Author's Notes:

When I first stepped into a theater in Tokyo that seated nearly a thousand people, I legit freaked out because of how massive it was...
