Even after that whole thing with Haruki this morning, everything went back to business as usual after that.
Hayato felt like his classmates were messing with him a bit too much, but since that's been the vibe lately, he figured it wasn't worth stressing over. Maybe Haruki was just lashing out at him because she'd been the one getting teased so much lately.
Lunch break.
Just as Hayato was about to head to the Secret Base, Kaidō Kazuki showed up to bug Hayato again.
"Hey, Kirishima-kun. What's the move for lunch?"
"I'm not really planning on—hey, don't just make yourself at home and start chilling here."
"Come on now, don't be like that, Kirishima."
Following right behind Kazuki, Mori Iori showed up too, leaving Hayato completely cornered by the two of them.
Both of them had these devious, "we're-up-to-no-good" grins on their faces. It was pretty clear they had no intention of letting Hayato escape.
(Seriously, why is Kaidō so obsessed with hanging out with me...?)
For some reason, it looked like Kaidō had taken a real liking to Hayato.
And unlike before, there wasn't a single soul—boy or girl—trying to crowd around them anymore.
'Haha, I really wanna have some boy talk with Kirishima-kun, so I'd appreciate it if the girls could give us some space,'
That's what Kaidō Kazuki had asked the other day.
With those words, the girls backed off, and the boys who were only there to flirt with the girls disappeared just as fast since their "bait" was gone. Talk about being shallow.
Only Mori Iori, who already had a sweetheart, kept hanging around just because he thought the whole thing was hilarious.
Hayato couldn't wrap his head around why Kazuki liked him so much.
Considering how they first met, Hayato was pretty sure he'd left a terrible first impression.
(Besides, this boy is supposedly into Haruki... ...right?)
Hayato remembered the rumors. Just thinking about it made Hayato's face sour like he'd just bitten into a lemon.
Misinterpreting Hayato's expression, Mori Iori and Kaidō Kazuki looked at each other and started teasing Hayato.
"Don't tell me you'd actually prefer it if the girls were still around, Kirishima-kun?"
"Haha, actually Kaidō, it looks like our boy Kirishima here already has someone on his mind."
"Oh? Who's the lucky girl? Someone I know?"
"She's this chick who's Nikaidō-san's childhood buddy."
"Hey, Mori—!"
Hayato tried his best to shut Mori Iori up before he made things even more complicated.
The problem was, Kaidō Kazuki stands out like a sore thumb. Naturally, everyone's eyes were on them. Hayato couldn't help but worry about how people around them were reacting.
But out of everyone, the one Hayato was most worried about was Haruki.
Hayato'd already failed to sneak out for lunch the other day and broke his promise. When he cautiously stole a glance, he made eye contact with Haruki, who was smiling sweetly at him. But her eyes? Yeah, they were screaming "I'm not happy about this" loud and clear.
(It's gonna be a pain if Haruki chews me out for this later.)
Thinking that was his cue, Hayato stood up and tried to turn down Mori Iori and Kaidō Kazuki.
"Sorry, today I'm—"
"You've already got plans with me, right?"
"—Huh?"
Suddenly, Haruki—sporting a grin way wider than usual—pushed her way right between Hayato and the boys.
"Oh, is that how it is, Nikaidō-san?"
"That's exactly how it is, Kaidō-kun."
"Whoa, hey!"
Haruki didn't stop there; She straight-up grabbed Hayato's arm and started pulling him away.
To anyone watching, it was a totally bizarre sight. Since both of them stand out so much, it was only natural that everyone's eyes were glued to them.
But Haruki and Kaidō Kazuki didn't give a d*mn about the crowd. They just kept staring each other down with fake smiles, with Hayato stuck right in the middle of their little standoff.
"About how long is this gonna take? Mind if I just hang out and wait here?"
"It's probably gonna take a while, so you're better off looking for someone else."
"Oh? Well, in that case, maybe I should pitch in and help out too, Kirishima-kun?"
"That won't be necessary. The place is cramped, and it's not the kind of job that goes faster just because you throw more people at it, right, Kirishima-kun?"
"Huh? Eh, well..."
Suddenly being put on the spot, Hayato started to totally lose his cool.
I mean, can you blame Hayato? You've got the two biggest stars in school, Nikaidō Haruki and Kaidō Kazuki, looking like they're literally fighting over Kirishima Hayato.
Hayato had no idea how things had spiraled this far, and there was no way people weren't gonna gossip about this.
(Wh-What happened to your cover, girl?!)
Hayato was completely thrown off by Haruki's behavior.
When Hayato looked at Haruki for some kind of explanation, all he got back was a bold, "Don't-mess-with-me" glare that seemed a little ticked off.
Kaidō Kazuki looked like he found Haruki's reaction absolutely hilarious, Kazuki's shoulders shaking as he held back a laugh, which only made Haruki switch to a total pout.
"Come on, let's go, Kirishima-kun. You're gonna help me, right?"
"Huh? Oh, eh, yeah..."
Acting like the conversation was officially over, Haruki grabbed Hayato's hand and hauled him out of the classroom.
Of course, this was the first Hayato had ever heard about "organizing the Library Prep Room."
Hayato glanced back as they left the room.
Hayato saw Mori Iori looking completely stunned and Kaidō Kazuki struggling not to burst out laughing.
"Oof, looks like I just got dumped."
Along with Kaidō Kazuki's little remark, the whole classroom erupted into total chaos.
"...I'm dying to know how Kirishima-kun managed to tame that monster cat, though."
But Kazuki's last words were drowned out by the noise of the crowd before anyone could hear them.
