Part Two
~Save That Old Energy Only For Me, Seriously!~
Chapter 47
Short and Blunt

After parting ways with Mitake Minamo, Hayato headed to class in a total daze.

(So, Haruki is the one Kaidō's really after, huh...?)

Nikaidō Haruki is popular.

Mori Iori had told Hayato that on Hayato's very first day after transferring, and honestly, even looking through Hayato's eyes, Haruki was definitely cute enough to justify the hype.

Hayato'd seen how everyone looked up to Haruki and leaned on her, and he’d caught her helping out with all sorts of stuff around school.

But ever since they reunited, Haruki'd always acted with the exact same vibe they had back in the day whenever she was around Hayato.

More than that, Haruki showed Hayato the vulnerable parts of herself that she kept hidden from everyone else.

Haruki's a handful and can be a real pain, but she's also so clumsy and reckless that you just can't leave her alone—that's who Haruki is to Hayato.

That's why, even when people told Hayato Haruki was a "boy magnet," it never really clicked for him. He even started to wonder if what Minamo just said was actually for real.

"Mornin'..."

"Yo, Flat-Chest Maniac Kirishima."

"Give me a break already... ...anyway, what's with all that?"

The second Hayato stepped into the room, he saw groups of girls huddled up everywhere, looking dead-serious and lowkey stressed.

Meanwhile, the boys were trying to act like it was just another day, but they were clearly fidgety and couldn't sit still.

Since he'd been teased so much yesterday, Hayato had actually braced himself to get messed with again, so this whole vibe felt like a bit of an anticlimax.

"Oh—well, you know. Just keep your ears open and you'll get it."

"Eh, okay."

Not really following what Mori Iori was getting at, Hayato tilted his head and headed for his seat.

Naturally, Hayato's eyes drifted toward Haruki's group at the next desk, and their convo started drifting into his ears.

"I guess the scariest part is the rebound, huh?"

"Actually, the real battle starts after you lose the weight."

"Ugh, those 'eat only this one thing' diets are such a total scam."

"Fufu, intense workouts are a trap for sure… …all they did was teach me that hunger is the best seasoning..."

"I'm seriously gonna lose at least another 11 pounds by summer break…"

"Summer clothes really show off your body lines, after all…"

"This year, this is definitely the year…!"

"Hmm, so basically, the best way is to watch what you eat and get some moderate exercise."

Surrounded by a bunch of girls, Haruki was deep in a serious "diet summit."

Since some of them were talking from experience, the convo was getting pretty heated.

And with summer right around the corner, the convo didn't just stop at swimsuits and fashion—stuff like "I want a boyfriend" or "I wanna fall in love" started popping up, which was clearly why all the boys in the room were acting so fidgety.

"So yeah, basically, it's about dieting."

"My little sis was making a fuss about dieting too. Is it like a trend or something?"

"It's summer, so isn't it just that time of year? Alright, let me give you a heads-up: Girls on a diet are emotionally unstable. Just think of them as wounded, starving beasts or something."

"Wow, you sound like you're speaking from experience."

"Haha, well, my girlfriend's like that."

"Oh yeah, you did mention you had one. Have you guys been together long?"

"Eh, since the end of middle school, so not that long… …but since we're childhood friends, I guess we've been 'together' for a long time in that sense."

"Huh, really?"

Those words from Mori Iori felt kind of weird to Hayato.

To Hayato, a "childhood friend" meant Haruki.

Sure, Haruki is a total beauty. Hayato knows her true self and they get along great.

But when it comes to whether Hayato wants to date Haruki or be her boyfriend, it just doesn't quite click. He feels like something's just... ...off.

Even so, after finding out a hottie like Kaidō Kazuki is into Haruki, Hayato's been feeling all restless and annoyed.

"…I don't really get it."

"Maybe you will if you try it yourself? Want us to go on a diet too?"

"Heck no."

"Then here's one piece of advice. For a hungry girl, you gotta fill her heart—and her chest—right up."

"Huh?"

"Praise her for trying hard, spoil her, and give her some skinship."

"What?! As if I could do that to my little sis—wait, you're just flexing your relationship on me!"

"Haha!"

After that weirdly mismatched back-and-forth with Mori Iori, Hayato finally flopped into his seat.

A quick glance to the side showed Hayato Haruki looking just like she always did—not like someone who actually needed a diet at all.

But seeing Haruki huddled up with the other girls, laughing and getting all worked up over their "diet summit," she just looked like any other normal girl you'd see anywhere.

It was a pretty average scene, honestly.

For Haruki, who used to say she was always alone and kept everyone out by faking being a "good girl," this should've been a really good sign.

But for some reason, it felt like Hayato was being told that he and Haruki lived in different worlds, and he didn't want to accept that—which is why his greeting came out sounding super blunt.

"...Morning."

"Oh, good morning, Kirishima-kun."

"―!"

Haruki gave Hayato a beaming, graceful smile, like absolutely nothing had happened yesterday. It was the perfect "Nikaidō Haruki" smile. But having that smile pointed at him only made Hayato's scowl get even worse.

One of the girls noticed and started teasing Hayato with an exasperated voice. The girl was one of the popular ones who always hung around Haruki, a likable girl with a bright personality and a short bob.

"Geez, Kirishima, are you seriously still salty about what Nikaidō-san said yesterday? Look, everyone knows boys are into melons, okay? Nobody's actually judging you for it."

"Wait, no! I mean, that's not it..."

Voices started popping up from all around Hayato, saying stuff like "C'mon, your face is actually scary," "Smile a bit, would ya?", and "I mean, I guess I went a little too far with the teasing yesterday, too." It was like they were all trying to back him up while lowkey sticking up for Haruki at the same time.

Then, Hayato's eyes locked with Haruki's, and she was looking at him with this totally apologetic face.

"Um, I'm really sorry about yesterday, Kirishima-kun."

"...Whatever. I'm not mad."

But Hayato just aggressively scratched his head and looked the other way.

From right next to him, Hayato could hear the sound of stifled, teasing laughter.
