Part Two~Save That Old Energy Only For Me, Seriously!~Chapter 52And You Are...?
It was a total heat-of-the-moment move.
Hayato'd just snapped and acted on impulse.
Haruki, Kaidō Kazuki, and everyone else around were stunned, but honestly, the one most shocked by it was Hayato himself.
(Agh—d*mmit!)
But since Hayato'd already opened his mouth, there was no going back. Hayato pushed his brain into overdrive to come up with something.
"Eh, look... ...you guys are heading somewhere for club activity business, right? I, eh, actually have a club activity I wanna join too, so I figured I'd just tag along."
Then, as if making a desperate excuse, Hayato spat the words out at lightning speed and started stomping down the hallway ahead of them.
"Um, you're actually going the wrong way, Kirishima-kun."
"...Ugh."
The second Haruki pointed that out, it was game over—everyone could see how rattled Hayato was, and he could hear the muffled giggles starting up around him.
"Why don't we all just head over together? You don't mind, right, Kaido-kun?"
"Oh, e-eh, sure, no problem."
When Haruki put it like that, Kaidō Kazuki didn't really have a choice but to agree, even though he had a pretty complicated look on his face.
Looking completely humiliated, Hayato started trailing along behind Haruki.
They walked down the hallway just before the Morning Homeroom started.
Since the first bell was about to ring, you could hear the noise from the classrooms, but the hallway itself was pretty much empty.
All three of them were walking a little faster than usual for some reason.
The vibe was honestly just bizarre.
You had Haruki, who was somehow in a great mood; Hayato, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else; And Kaidō Kazuki, looking totally lost as to how things ended up like this.
In the middle of that awkward silence, Kaidō Kazuki was the one to break the ice.
"Joining a club activity this late in the year... ...that's pretty rare, isn't it?"
If the rumors were true, then Hayato had just straight-up cockblocked Kazuki's move on Haruki.
But Kazuki's tone was chill, and his face didn't show any bitterness or hidden saltiness. He seemed like he was asking out of genuine, pure curiosity.
"...I'm a transfer student."
"Oh, I get it, so you're the new boy. What club activity you planning on joining? If it's the Soccer Club, we'd totally love to have you, man."
"Gardening Club."
"...Wait, what?"
The sound Kazuki made was pure, unadulterated shock.
Kaidō Kazuki stared Hayato up and down, looking completely lost.
Standing well over 170 cm, Hayato had a height that was above average, and his arms peeking out from his short-sleeved uniform were toned with skin bronzed from the sun. Hayato's physique was fit and lean—the kind of build that would make anyone, not just Kazuki, assume Hayato was into some kind of varsity sport.
So, when the words "Gardening Club" came out of a boy like Hayato, it was only natural to be stunned.
But Hayato took that reaction personally, as if Gardening—working the fields—was being mocked, and Hayato snapped back with a look of pure annoyance.
"Hey, you're in the Soccer Club, right?"
"Yeah, I am, but..."
"What's so great about Soccer, though?"
"What do you mean? Well... ...unlike other sports, a single goal is worth so much, there's a ton of freedom on the field, and then there's that sense of unity with your teammates... ...I mean, there's way too much to even list, but..."
"Gardening—working a field—is exactly the same thing."
Taking a deep breath, Hayato stopped in his tracks and turned to face Kazuki head-on.
"You gotta water 'em, prune 'em, add fertilizer, and deal with weeds and bugs every single day. It takes a ton of work and it's way more back-breaking than you'd think. But man, those veggies give back exactly what you put in. Every single one has its own personality, and when a weird-shaped one grows, it feels like winning the lottery. Here, look at this! Getting your hands dirty in the soil is the best thing ever!"
Then, with a "How 'bout that?" look on Hayato's face, he shoved his smartphone at them to show off the eggplant with the Tengu nose and the twisted peppers.
Both Haruki and Kaidō Kazuki could only blink in pure shock as Hayato suddenly started geeking out over the magic of Gardening—or rather, veggie farming.
I mean, a high school boy who gets this hyped about playing in the dirt is a rare breed. Anyone would've been stunned.
But what Haruki—Nikaidō Haruki—did next completely floored Kaidō Kazuki.
"Aha, ahahaha! Haya-... ...K-Kirishima-kun, I had no idea you were such a gardening freak! Totally, I think it's awesome to have something you're that passionate about!"
"Well, yeah, I've been doing it forever—ow! Cut it out, that hurts! Stop slapping my back!"
"N-Nikaidō-san?!"
Haruki looked like she couldn't stop laughing even if she tried, clutching her stomach before she suddenly started whaling on Hayato's back. And man, she was doing it with this total "zero-boundaries" vibe.
To Kaidō Kazuki, who always saw Nikaidō Haruki as the polite, sweet, and perfectly put-together girl next door—seeing her like this was a total curveball. It shocked Kazuki, but it also piqued his interest big time.
"Oh... ...well, ahem, let's keep moving."
"...Sure."
"Y-Yeah, good call."
Noticing Kazuki's gaze, Haruki let out a totally fake cough. She smoothed out the hem of her skirt for no reason at all, reset the mood, and started walking again. The way she could flip the switch that fast was honestly mind-blowing.
The Student Council Office, their destination, was less than a minute's walk away.
"Excuse me—Oh, is no one here? Well, I'll go grab the forms, so just hang tight for a sec."
"Gotcha."
"Thanks, Nikaidō-san."
Hayato, who'd gotten a bit worked up for some reason, scratched his head aggressively to hide his embarrassment while watching Haruki from behind. She didn't hesitate for a second as she searched through the cabinets.
(Haruki's really used to this kind of stuff, huh...)
Seeing yet another side of Haruki he still didn't know about made an indescribable, bitter feeling spread through Hayato's chest.
"...I had no idea."
"Huh?"
Kaidō Kazuki muttered, almost as if he were speaking for Hayato. It sounded like Kazuki'd said it just loud enough for Hayato to hear.
"That Nikaidō-san just now... ...do you think that's the real Nikaidō Haruki?"
"...Who knows."
The question felt like Kazuki was double-checking something.
That murky, annoyed feeling kept building up in Hayato's chest, making his reply come out sounding totally blunt and far from friendly.
(Haruki's "fake persona... ...wasn't she supposed to keep that under wraps?...)
Hayato knew he was being childish.
But after seeing how careless Haruki had just been, Hayato really wanted to throw some shade her way.
"I'm Kaidō Kazuki. And you are?"
"Huh?"
"Your name."
"...Kirishima Hayato."
But as if to show Kazuki was interested in Hayato too, Kaidō Kazuki reached out his hand for a handshake.
Hayato had no clue what Kazuki was playing at. Hayato just stared at the hand for a hot second.
Taking a look at Kazuki's face, he was putting a bright, friendly smile—didn't seem like there was a drop of malice in him.
(....)
A rumor's just a rumor.
Besides, whatever happens with Haruki shouldn't be any of Hayato's business.
But the fact was, Hayato couldn't help but be totally bothered by it.
"Nice to meet ya, Kirishima-kun."
"...Yeah."
With a complicated look on his face, Hayato finally took the Kazuki's hand.
