Rather than just a bunch of flowers, it was more like a bouquet with small blossoms packed together tightly in a neat, round shape.
With the male zucchini flowers at the center, tiny white, yellow, and purple blossoms from eggplants and tomatoes were woven around them like a flower crown, making the whole thing look lively.
Even though Hayato didn't know much about flowers, he could tell this was a ton of work. And more than anything―

Mitake Minamo was beyond flustered.
Not only had Minamo been blindsided with the word "cute," but being looked at that way by a boy made her mind go completely blank. Brimming with tears, she turned into a creature that could only let out whimpering "au au" sounds.

To Hayato, Minamo really did seem like the sheep back in Tsukinose belonging to Old Man Gen, which could do nothing but bleat "baa baa" whenever they got startled. He stifled a chuckle deep in his throat.
Mitake Minamo, thinking she was being laughed at, turned even deeper shades of crimson and fidgeted in embarrassment―and then, something came flying at Hayato with incredible force.
"Whoa!"
"Kya!"
When Hayato reached out and caught it, he realized it was a plastic Coke bottle.
Hayato had no idea what just happened.
Looking around to see who the heck did that, Hayato saw an old man in hospital scrubs, his face flushed red like a boiled octopus. He was still in his follow-through from an overthrow pitch, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably.
"Y-Y-Y-You little brat! What are you doin' to my Minamo?!"
"Grandpa!"
"Huh... ...what?!"
The veggie flower bouquet in Mitake Minamo's hands and the old man in hospital scrubs.
Looking back and forth between the two of them, Hayato realized exactly what the situation was.
"Hey Kiddo, stay right there. You went and made Minamo cry... ...just what did you do?! Don't tell me... ...answer me, depending on what you say, I won't show any mercy!"
"No, look, I was just—wait—"
"Wait, Grandpa, you've got it all wrong!"
Whatever Hayato'd misunderstood, the old man started swinging his simple walking cane around.
The old man's face was just as beet-red as his granddaughter's, leading Hayato, who had become strangely calm, to think, "Oh, must be in the blood."
But the intensity and the sharp look in the old man's eyes made Hayato flinch; it felt more fierce than a veteran hunter from the Hunting Association. In fact, the way the old man swung that cane was so intense you'd never think it came from an old man.
"How dare you mess with my granddaughter!"
"Ouch! That hurts!"
"G-Grandpa!"
As a result, clearing up this misunderstanding was going to take a heck of a lot of effort.
